 Former Bank of China chairman sentenced to death on corruption charges Liu Liange, former Party chief and chairman of Bank of China, was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve in a first-instance trial on Tuesday for accepting large sums in bribes. The sentence was delivered by the Jinan Intermediate People's Court in East China's Shandong Province, according to China Central Television (CCTV). During his tenure from 2010 to 2023, Liu took bribes of 121 million yuan ($16.7 million) to assist with loans, projects, and personnel arrangements. He approved illegal loans amounting to 3.32 billion yuan from 2017 to 2020, causing losses of over 190.7 million yuan. Liu was sentenced to death with a two-year reprieve, stripped of his political rights for life and had all personal assets seized.  Cleric Urges Christians to Shun Heresies, Proclaim Christ as Universal King

Vicar, St Paul's Catholic Church Akpo, Rev Fr George Arugbue has called on men of God to eschew heresies, present Jesus Christ as king of universe.

He said this in a homily during Mass at the Church, in Aguata LGA, to commemorate 2024 Corpus Christi celebration.


The cleric identified heresies as over emphasizing one truth at the expense of the other especially with view of self aggrandizement.


He highlighted the importance of seeking first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and urged Christians to accept Jesus as their Lord and King 


Fr Arugbue enjoined young people not to fall prey to fraudsters who claim to have what it takes to making people rich, advising them to work hard to become solution provider instead of being part of it.

  SSANU, NASU threaten strike over withheld salaries The Joint Action Committee of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions have threatened to disrupt industrial peace in universities should the government fail to release the withheld salaries of members. The salaries were seized by the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari during their strike in 2022. The unions, in a joint letter signed on Friday by the President of SSANU, Muhammed Ibrahim and General Secretary of NASU, Peters Adeyemi, questioned the rationale with which the government released four months withheld salaries to members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities but failed to release the withheld salaries of non-academic staff.
