Victoria Hughes had worked at the IHOP in Lakeland, Florida for 13 years and felt she had some measure of job security... until an act of charity cost her, her job.
Victoria says last Sunday, November 24th, a homeless man came inside of the restaurant and complained of extreme hunger. Victoria didn't think twice about providing a stack of pancakes and a glass of water for the unfortunate man.
However, when she told her manager about giving the hungry man the pancakes, he became visibly upset and claimed it would cause a loitering situation and could jeopardize the safety of customers.
When the man showed back up with a family who bought food for him, it certainly upset the manager. On Tuesday, November 26th, she received a phone call from her manager. He informed her she had failed to comply with company procedures and he was letting her go.
Victoria was floored by the decision and it cast considerable holiday uncertainty as she has children to support. Despite losing her job, Victoria doesn't regret her decision to help a hungry person.
After Victoria spoke with local news outlets and the story started to get attention, she received a call from the IHOP corporate office. The company was offering her a job and willing to compensate her for the days she had missed due to her manager firing her.
There is no report on whether her manager received any disciplinary action following his rash decision to fire an employee for being a good person.
