 Malian army withdraws from key Tessalit military camp: sources Mali’s army and its Russian mercenary allies have surrendered Camp Tessalit, a strategic military post in the north, multiple sources told the AFP news agency on Friday. An official from the Tuareg-led separatist group claimed soldiers and mercenaries at the camp had "surrendered", following a fierce fight over the weekend. Simultaneous attacks in Mali by militants linked to Al Qaeda and separatist Tuareg rebels on April 25 showed how fighters ​from different groups with different goals were able to strike at the heart of the West African country's military government. Gunfire and explosions were reported in the capital Bamako and around a large military base outside the capital, as well as Gao and central areas, as gunfire continuing in the northern city of Kidal. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Monarch of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, His Majesty King Charles III, on the occasion of his 76th birthday.


In a congratulatory message delivered on Thursday during a reception held at the residence of the British Deputy High Commissioner, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the enduring historical bonds between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.


The Governor stated: “Your birthday is not just a celebration of your life but also of your unwavering dedication to public service, environmental advocacy, and your profound commitment to enhancing the well-being of communities across the globe. On behalf of the people and government of Lagos State, I express our sincere appreciation for the deep historical ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, which have fostered strong cultural, diplomatic, and economic partnerships. As we look forward to continuing to build on these bonds, we celebrate Your Majesty’s leadership as a source of unity and inspiration to all.”


He lauded King Charles III for his exemplary leadership and vision, which continue to inspire Lagos State and the global community to uphold sustainability, inclusivity, and harmony. The Governor emphasised the King’s efforts in setting a powerful example for future generations.


Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin further acknowledged the King’s remarkable contributions to global unity, sustainability, and inclusivity. He prayed for His Majesty's continued good health, happiness, and a peaceful reign marked by greater accomplishments and joy.


The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, members of the Lagos State Executive Council, and distinguished guests from various walks of life.
