 The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday. Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has extended heartfelt congratulations to the Monarch of the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, His Majesty King Charles III, on the occasion of his 76th birthday.


In a congratulatory message delivered on Thursday during a reception held at the residence of the British Deputy High Commissioner, Governor Sanwo-Olu praised the enduring historical bonds between the United Kingdom and Nigeria.


The Governor stated: “Your birthday is not just a celebration of your life but also of your unwavering dedication to public service, environmental advocacy, and your profound commitment to enhancing the well-being of communities across the globe. On behalf of the people and government of Lagos State, I express our sincere appreciation for the deep historical ties between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, which have fostered strong cultural, diplomatic, and economic partnerships. As we look forward to continuing to build on these bonds, we celebrate Your Majesty’s leadership as a source of unity and inspiration to all.”


He lauded King Charles III for his exemplary leadership and vision, which continue to inspire Lagos State and the global community to uphold sustainability, inclusivity, and harmony. The Governor emphasised the King’s efforts in setting a powerful example for future generations.


Governor Sanwo-Olu, represented at the event by the Secretary to the State Government, Barr. 'Bimbola Salu-Hundeyin further acknowledged the King’s remarkable contributions to global unity, sustainability, and inclusivity. He prayed for His Majesty's continued good health, happiness, and a peaceful reign marked by greater accomplishments and joy.


The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including the Chief of Staff to the Governor of Lagos State, Mr. Tayo Ayinde, members of the Lagos State Executive Council, and distinguished guests from various walks of life.
