Yemen fighting pushes nearly 3,000 to Djibouti in less than a week: UN    Nearly 3,000 people have fled Yemen for Djibouti in less than a week as escalating violence drives growing displacement within the country and across its borders, the UN refugee agency said Friday. “Refugees continue to arrive by boat through Obock, Khor Angar, Moulhoule and Godoria after difficult journeys in small vessels,” UNHCR representative in Djibouti Sandrine Desamours told reporters in Geneva, Anadolu Agency reported. More than half of those crossing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait are women and children, while some families have been displaced for a second time after previously fleeing Yemen during the 2015 crisis and later returning. UNHCR is preparing for at least 10,000 new arrivals but warned that capacity is rapidly diminishing.  Observers Praise Peaceful Conduct of Zamfara LG Election


The Zamfara State Independent Electoral Commission (ZASIEC) has announced a landslide victory for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which secured all 14 chairmanship and 147 councillorship seats in Saturday’s local government elections.  


Election observers, led by Lazarus Nwachukwu, commended the peaceful, accessible, and fair conduct of the polls during a press briefing in Gusau on Sunday.  


The election, which saw the participation of 18 political parties, was monitored by a team of 47 accredited NGOs and CSOs, divided across the state’s three senatorial districts.  


“Our teams visited all 14 local government areas and observed that the elections were peaceful and credible, with voters turning out in large numbers to exercise their constitutional rights,” Nwachukwu noted.  


He credited the success to ZASIEC’s early distribution of election materials and adherence to due process, adding that political party agents actively safeguarded their parties’ interests at polling units.  


Observers expressed satisfaction with the election process, describing it as transparent, participatory, and compliant with electoral laws.
