 Over 25 million phones stolen in one year – FG The Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey report of the National Bureau of Statistics, a Federal Government agency, shows that Nigeria recorded 25.35 million phone theft cases between May 2023 and April 2024. According to the report, this was the most common type of crime within the period under review. The report read, “The number of crimes experienced by individuals in Nigeria was analysed over a period of time. The results show that theft of phones (25,354,417) was the most common crime experienced by individuals, followed by consumer fraud (12,107,210) and assault (8,453,258). However, hijacking of cars (333,349) was the least crime experienced by individuals within the reference period.” It also noted that most phone theft cases occurred either at home or in a public place, and about 90 per cent of such cases were reported to the police.  POLICE SERGEANT ARRESTED AFTER MURDER OF WIFE AND DOMESTIC WORKER


A 44-year-old Police Sargeant has been arrested following the alleged shooting of his wife and domestic worker at their homestead in Masisi, Vhembe district, on the evening of 29 October 2024. The Sergeant has been on the run since then, until his subsequent arrest following a shootout with police on Thursday night, 31 October 2024.

The suspect was located in the Makuya policing area after a well co-ordinated operation by Vhembe SAPS District Task team members. He was spotted driving at high speed along Tshitavha road next to Sambandou bridge.


When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the suspect started firing multiple shots at them, prompting the police to respond swiftly. The suspect was wounded in the exchange, and one police officer sustained minor injuries. The Police recovered a service pistol and ammunition.


Both the suspect and the injured officer were transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.


The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has been notified for further handling of the case following the shooting ordeal.


The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has commended the rapid response of members in Vhembe district.


“We wish the injured member a speedy recovery and assure the public that the suspect will face the full consequences of his actions, particularly for his refusal to surrender and the violence he displayed towards our officers. A special appreciation goes to our members for ensuring that the suspect is apprehended swiftly. This case will be monitored closely to ensure justice is served,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.


The suspect is expected to appear before the Masisi Magistrate’s Court soon, facing two counts of murder and attempted murder.
