Update- Indiana woman who sat on her 10-year-old foster son until he died, pleads guilty. She is facing a mere 6 years in prison. More details emerge.
We covered this story at the time of the incident. At that time 49-year-old Jennifer Wilson was arrested and charged in the homicide of 10-year-old Dakota Steven's. Jennifer is reportedly 340 lbs. She laid on top of her 90 pound foster son until he passed away.
The Porter County Sheriff's department was called to the home of Jennifer Lee Wilson on April 25th, 2024. Once on scene, they discovered Dakota unresponsive and on the ground near the driveway. There was an individual attempting CPR and responding officers took over awaiting EMS.
Dakota was transferred to the hospital where he passed away two days later. An autopsy listed his death as a homicide. Dakota's death had occurred by severe swelling in the brain and deprivation of oxygen for an extended period. He also had suffered hemorrhaging of the liver and lungs as well as other organ damage.
Authorities began an investigation and a shocking story emerged. According to Wilson, Dakota had misbehaved all day and ran from the home when she told him to do his chores.
Dakota had in fact ran to a neighbor's home and asked them to call 911 because he was being abused. Wilson found Dakota and told the neighbor woman to, "Mind her own buisness". She then drove home and the physical altercation began when Dakota tried to leave again.
Wilson has stated that she only intended to hold Dakota down. However footage shows Dakota initially kicked and struggled to get free as she laid on top of him but eventually he became motionless. Additional footage shows Wilson remained on top of Dakota for approximately 7 minutes as he laid completely motionless. When Wilson finally realized Dakota had lost consciousness she can be heard screaming, "I was laying on him and he was acting bad".
Wilson has pleaded guilty to one count of reckless homicide and is set for sentencing on January 17th. She faces up to 6-years in prison and a $10,000 fine.
