Obasanjo: Anti-Corruption Efforts Must Start with Leaders

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has emphasized that the fight against corruption in Nigeria must begin with the nation's leaders in order to foster effective leadership and bring about lasting change. Speaking during an interactive Zoom session titled "Boiling Point Arena" on Sunday, Obasanjo stressed the need for a consistent and ongoing effort to tackle corruption.

He described corruption as a deeply entrenched issue in Nigerian society, blaming those in power for perpetuating it. Drawing on a metaphor from the late Sultan of Sokoto, Obasanjo likened corruption to a babariga (a traditional garment), which, when folded on one side, falls apart on the other. He explained that corruption is a continuous, multi-regime issue that requires sustained action. "It’s not a one-day affair or a problem that can be solved by one regime. It must be a consistent, daily effort," Obasanjo concluded.
