 Meta to end end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages Meta is ending end-to-end encryption for Instagram direct messages, a feature the company says will no longer be available after May 8, 2026. Unlike WhatsApp, Instagram never offered encryption to all users or as a default; only select users in certain regions could opt in on a per-chat basis. A Meta spokesperson explained that the decision comes due to low adoption. “Very few people were opting in to end-to-end encrypted messaging in DMs, so we’re removing this option from Instagram in the coming months,” the spokesperson said. “Anyone who wants to keep messaging with end-to-end encryption can easily do that on WhatsApp.” Meta’s messaging strategy has shifted multiple times over the years. WhatsApp chats have been encrypted since 2016, and the company began rolling out default encryption for Messenger in 2023.  Regional challenges cost Egypt around $7 bln of Suez Canal revenues in 2024, Sisi says


Events in the Red Sea and regional challenges cost Egypt around $7 billion in revenues from the Suez Canal in 2024, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi said on Thursday, Reuters reported.


Egypt lost more than 60% of the canal's revenues in 2024 compared with 2023, Sisi added in his statement, without going into details on the events.


Houthi fighters in Yemen have carried out nearly 100 attacks on ships crossing the Red Sea since November in solidarity with Palestinians in Israel's more than year-old war in Gaza.


The attacks have forced shipping firms to divert vessels from the Suez Canal to longer routes around Africa, disrupting global trade by delaying deliveries and sending costs higher.
