 Mali renames colonial French street names Mali followed Burkina Faso and Niger on Wednesday in renaming streets and squares in its capital to get rid of their French colonial names, AFP reported. Streets bearing the names of members of France's colonial administration have been rebaptised in Bamako, according to a decree by the junta chief. Cedeao Avenue (the French acronym for the Economic Community of West African States or ECOWAS) is also now named after a new strategic confederation that Mali has formed with Burkina Faso and Niger – the Alliance of Sahel States (AES). In all, nearly 25 names have been replaced, among them boulevards, streets, squares and public establishments. Niger and Burkina Faso have already made several changes to street and monument names in the last two years. In October, Niger renamed several historic sites in its capital Niamey which previously bore references to old colonial master France.  Stampede: Organizers of Ibadan Children's Carnival Arrested – Makinde


Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has announced the arrest of the organizers of a children’s carnival in which an undisclosed number of children were reportedly killed in a stampede.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Governor confirmed the incident took place in the Bashorun area of Ibadan earlier that day.


Makinde stated that the state government has taken immediate actions to prevent further fatalities, including initiating an investigation into the incident. He emphasized that those responsible will be held accountable.


The Governor also mentioned that medical teams and ambulances have been dispatched to the scene, the event has been halted, and attendees were safely escorted out of the venue.


“Earlier today, a tragic incident occurred at Islamic High School Basorun, where an event for families was being held. We have deployed security personnel to restore order and prevent further casualties, while medical personnel and ambulances have been sent to assist. The event has been canceled, and attendees have been escorted off the premises,” Makinde stated.


He also confirmed that the primary organizers of the event, which led to the stampede, have been arrested, and investigations are currently underway.
