 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity. Former US Senator Bob Menendez Sentenced to 11 Years for Bribery


A federal judge has sentenced former US Senator Bob Menendez to 11 years in prison after his conviction on corruption charges, including bribery, extortion, and obstruction of justice.


Menendez, a 71-year-old Democrat from New Jersey, was found guilty of accepting bribes to benefit businessmen with ties to Egypt and Qatar. The case gained national attention after authorities discovered gold bars and nearly $500,000 in cash hidden in his home.


During sentencing, District Judge Sidney Stein criticized Menendez, stating, “Somewhere along the way… you lost your way. Working for the public good became working for your good.”


Menendez, who previously chaired the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, has vowed to appeal the ruling, calling his prosecution a "witch hunt." He was convicted alongside two businessmen, while his wife, Nadine Menendez, faces separate charges.


Prosecutors had pushed for a 15-year sentence, citing an "egregious abuse of power," while the defense sought no more than eight years.
