An Alabama woman, Towana Looney, made headlines by living with a genetically modified pig kidney for a record 130 days before her body began rejecting it.  The organ was removed on April 4 at NYU Langone Health. Looney has since returned home to Gadsden, Alabama, and is back on dialysis. Despite the outcome, she expressed gratitude for being part of this groundbreaking xenotransplantation research, hoping her experience will help others battling kidney disease. This experiment is part of a broader effort to address the U.S. organ shortage, where over 100,000 people await transplants. Scientists are genetically modifying pig organs to make them more compatible with humans. Looneyā€™s case is notable because, unlike earlier xenotransplant patients who were critically ill, she was healthier, allowing for a longer observation period. Her 130-day milestone marks significant progress in the field. The pig kidney functioned well until early April, when her immune system began rejectin...

GANI FAWEHINMI'S DAUGHTER BLASTS FAROTIMI FOR ALLEGEDLY DEFAMING AFE BABALOLA. (PHOTO).

Gani Fawehinmiā€™s daughter blasts Farotimi for allegedly defaming Afe Babalola

Bashirat Fawehinmi-Biobaku, first daughter of the late social critic and rights activist, Chief Gani Fawehinmi, has taken a swipe at human rights activist, Dele Farotimi over what she described as ā€˜baseless accusationsā€™ against the founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola.

She stated this at the 21st anniversary of Chief Gani Fawehinmi annual lecture held at Lagos Airport Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State.

Recalled that Dele Farotimi accused the legal luminary in his book titled ā€˜Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice Systemā€™, of using his influence to corrupt the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

Fawehinmi-Biobaku noted that his allegations did not only defame the elder statesman but also the sanctity of the Supreme Court and the integrity of the judiciary.

She urged Nigerians who are advocates of justice, to resist the temptation to allow false narratives to overshadow the monumental contributions of the likes of Aare Afe Babalola.

Her words, ā€œI seek the permission of this noble gathering to call to mind what the former Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie aptly said; ā€˜Throughout history, it has been the inaction of those who should have acted, the indifference of those who should have known better, and the silence of the voice of justice when it mattered most that has made it possible for evil to triumph.

ā€œA recent publication, Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System by one Mr. Dele Farotimi, exemplifies this troubling trend. The author maligns not only Aare Afe Babalola but also the sanctity of the Supreme Court and the integrity of the judiciary at large.

ā€œThe author hinged his outburst on the case of Major Muritala Gbadamosi Eletu & Ors v. H.R.H. Oba Tijani Akinloye & Ors (2013) 15 NWLR (Pt. 1378) 443. While constructive criticism aimed at reform is welcome, it is crucial to distinguish between genuine calls for improvement and baseless accusations that erode public trust.

ā€œAs we honor the ideals of Fawehinmism and the legacy of Chief Gani Fawehinmi, let us reaffirm our commitment to defending the judiciary and its stalwarts. Aare Afe Babalolaā€™s story demonstrates that greatness is achieved through unwavering dedication, integrity, and service to humanity.

ā€œWe must resist the temptation to allow false narratives to overshadow the monumental contributions of individuals like Aare Afe Babalola.

ā€œInstead, let us celebrate their achievements and draw inspiration from their lives to build a future where justice and truth prevail.

ā€œIn conclusion, I urge us all to carry forward the principles of justice, fairness, and service that Aare Afe Babalola and Gani Fawehinmi epitomize. May we continue to honor their legacies by upholding the values they so fiercely defendedā€.
