 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has felicitated the billionaire industrialist and Chairman of the Eleganza Group, Chief Rasaq Akanni Okoya, on his 85th birthday celebration. 


He said the renowned business magnate and philanthropist, who will be 85 tomorrow, Sunday, is worth celebrating for his life of consistent commitment and contribution to the economy and livelihood of many Nigerians, particularly in Lagos State, where many of his companies are located. 


 

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in a statement issued on Saturday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, said Chief Okoya, the Aare of Lagos, has contributed to the growth of Nigeria’s economy, provided jobs for many Nigerians through his investments and has spread to other African market.


 

He said: “On behalf of my family, the government, and the people of Lagos State, I join family, friends and business associates to celebrate the Chairman of the Eleganza Group and the RAO Property Investment Company, Chief Rasaq Akanni Okoya, on his 85th birthday celebration. He is one of Nigeria’s business magnates and philanthropists that are impacting lives positively. 


 

“The Aare of Lagos is a generous man who has given hope through philanthropic gestures to the less privileged in the society. He has given scholarships to many people, particularly the young people, to further their education and also provided funds to many people to start small businesses.


"I wish Chief Okoya the best on his 85th birthday. I pray that God will grant him a longer life, strength, and sound health to continue to continuously enjoy the dividends of his long years of investment.”
