GROUPS WARN BENUE SONS, DAUGHTERS AGAINST DISTRACTING GOV. ALIA

30th January, 2025

Twelve tribal groups of the Kunav extraction in Benue State, under the aegis of Coalition of Kunav Groups, have warned in very strong terms, itā€™s son and daughters that have been going against the State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia, who is also of the Kunav extraction.

While condemning the attacks which are intended at distracting the governor, the groups advised their kith and kin to be a source of encouragement to the governor, instead of being a source of distraction.

Condemning the attacks on the governor at a press conference in Makurdi on Tuesday, spokesman for the Coalition, Dr Peter Anule, warned that anyone that does anything to the contrary was on his own.

Anule, who is also the President, Club De 8, said the groups were also appreciative for the rescue of the President General, Kunav Development Association (KUDA), Deacon Emmanuel Tor Yaji, from the hands of kidnappers and the subsequent arrest of some of the perpetrators of the act.

While condemning the spate of insecurity that recently affected Kwande, Gwer-West, Konshisha, and Oju Local Government Areas (LGAs) of the state, the groups commended Governor Alia, as well as security agencies in the state for their quick intervention that led to the rescue of the President General of KUDA.

Anule said ā€œOur stand here is to make a strong statement in that regard. Despite what the governor is doing he is getting attacked on all sides and we are not surprised because for a long time they have not seen governance at this level and not everyone is in tune with this.

ā€œHowever, we condemn those attacks that are meant to derail him. What we expect is that they should encourage him. We want you to know that the groups here represent Kunav land, both here and in the diaspora; political leadership and all shades of opinion in Kunav land

ā€œSome of the things you see as attacks (on the governor), they call it politics. But anyone that does anything to the contrary is on his own and we will not align with such a person. We have spoken to them and we will continue to talk to those who insist on doing it, in order to distract him.

ā€œHowever, on this platform we express our full solidarity with the governor in terms of what he is doing; what he stands for and what he intends to do for the stateā€, he stressed.

Also lending his voice on the rescue of the President General KUDA, Dr Boniface Jirbo, Chairman, Kunav Unity Forum (KUF), said, ā€œThe security forces stepped in and within 48 hours, he was rescued. Law enforcement agencies are still investigating; some arrests have been made and investigation is ongoing.

ā€œThis act is something that we should condemn in very strong terms; law-abiding citizens doing their lawful business should not be harassed nor molested.ā€

Earlier, Dr Anule said, ā€œSuch acts of violence (kidnapping) are an affront to the peace-loving nature of the Kunav people and a threat to the progress we are striving to achieve. While we continue to seek peaceful coexistence with our neighbors, we will not hesitate to take decisive action against any individual or group that seeks to disrupt the peace and stability of our communities.ā€

Therefore, the groups unequivocally expressed their support for ā€œthe visionary leadership and remarkable achievements of Governor Alia, adding that the Governor has displayed exemplary leadership, which is characterized by a commitment for positive change, development, and the well-being of all citizens of the state.

He further said, ā€œWhile we celebrate these achievements, the coalition of Kunav groups, stand solidly behind the President General of KUDA in his unwavering commitment to

offer full support and solidarity to the Governor of Benue state in order to ensure that His Excellency

can deliver on his mandate for the benefit of all citizens of Benue state.

ā€œWe remain undaunted in our resolve to support the Governorā€™s agenda and continue pursuing peace and development in our state.

ā€œWe urge him (governor) to remain focused on his visionary goals for the state and promise our continued support as he works to make Benue a model

of development, peace, and prosperity.

We stand united in our commitment to a brighter future for Benue and the Kunav people.ā€

The groups applauded governor Alia in the area of Timely payment of salaries and pensions; approval of New minimum wage; revitalization of infrastructure; the renovation of the State secretariat and State House of Assembly complex, as well as the modernization of Aper Aku stadium, among other achievements.

Speaking at the occasion, the Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Benue State Council, Comrade Bemdoo Ugber, said the state was proud of Governor Alia, for the landmark achievements he has so far recorded.

He however explained that while media would continue to project the activities of the state government, it will also continue play its role as the watch dog of the society, by holding government accountable at all times.
