28-year-old Chelsea Adolphus was admitted to the Vista Medical Center East, in Waukegan, Illinois this week for an unspecified medical issue. Her brother has been quoted as saying, "She came here because she trusted that she was going to get better from rehab from drinking."
Soon after being admitted Chelsea was reported as being missing by the hospital staff.
Chelsea remained missing until the morning hours of January 23rd, when hospital staff made a shocking discovery on the building's roof.
At approximately 8:45 a.m., Chelsea was found completely unresponsive on the roof of the hospital. Officials are not sure how long Chelsea had been up there but did conform it appeared she had slept up there.
Chelsea was rushed downstairs to the hospital's emergency department where she was treated for exposure to the cold, however it was already too late to reverse the damage done and Chelsea sadly passed away at 11:03 p.m. on the same night she was discovered.
The Lake County Coroner's Office has called the circumstances surrounding the death of Chelsea Adolphus "unusual" and an investigation has been launched.
Chelsea's family are extremely distraught and wonder how the hospital failed their loved one to the point of her disappearing and ultimately dying while in their care. Her brother Paul has stated, "It's not fair that my sister's life was in their hands." He added, "Doors should be locked. Doors should be very secure."
Paul believes the facility should have taken precautions to ensure not only his sister's safety but the safety of all patients.
Waukegan PD and the Lake County Coroner are expected to release the findings of their investigation in a press conference on Monday January 27th.
We will update.
