ā€¦ Restates Commitment To The Attainment Of Universal Healthcare Coverage.

Lagos State Government has commenced a three-day free HIV testing and counselling services programme for residents of 19 riverine communities in the state. The initiative aims to provide accessible and reliable healthcare services to individuals living in these communities.

Dr. Folakemi Animashaun, the Chief Executive Officer, Lagos State Aids Control Agency, leading a team of skilled healthcare professionals to the riverine communities, explained that the exercise, held in collaboration with the Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems, underscores the importance of providing sustainable healthcare delivery services throughout the state.

The programme, which holds from January 29 to 31, 2025, aligns with the attainment of the Health and Environment Mandate of the THEMES Plus Agenda. It will take place in 19 communities within Amowo Odofin and Ojo Local Government areas of the State.

Dr. Animashaun noted that HIV remains a significant public health challenge in Nigeria, and early detection is crucial for effective treatment and prevention of further transmission. The free HIV testing and counselling services aim to provide residents of riverine areas, especially fishermen, with access to confidential and accurate HIV testing and professional counselling services.

The 19 beneficiary communities include Sabo Koji, Gavi Koji, Bishop Koji, Whala Koji, Tie Gate, Ibeshe, Igbasha, Ilado Odo, Ijegun, Olomometa, Esofin, Imoba, Ishagiri, Ira, Imoore, Erekun, Ibode, Igboja, and Tafi communities in Amowo Odofin and Ojo Local Government areas of the state.

The CEO emphasised that early detection and treatment of HIV are critical in stopping the spread of the virus. The free HIV testing and counselling services are designed to remove barriers to testing and provide necessary support for those affected.

The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that every resident has easy access to these vital health services, reinforcing the state's efforts to curb the spread of HIV and providing necessary care and support.

Dr. Animashaun encouraged everyone to take advantage of this pivotal service for their health and the well-being of the community, adding that "The free HIV screening and counselling service is one of the strategies deployed by the Lagos State AIDS Control Agency for early detection, management, and control of the spread of HIV. The state remains committed to ensuring that no one is left behind."
