 Adamu Garba Calls  A State of Emergency in Edo State, Gives Reason A member of the All Progressive Congress, Adamu Garba, popularly known for being vocal on political issues, has called for the declaration of a State of Emergency in Edo State. According to the post he made on his X account, this was necessary due to the killing of Hausa travellers on their way to celebrate Sallah. He wrote: “If there is any place that needed urgent state of emergency right very this moment is the Udune Efandion community of Uromi, Edo State. The butchers of that community MUST be held to account for killing innocent Hausa travelers. They were killed fasting , while on their way back home for Sallah holiday. Mr. Governor  @m_akpakomiza should deploy all necessary measures and resources to ensure that those butchers are fished out and punished.”  Adamu’s post is in reaction to the crime that took place in Edo State.  Report has it that 16 innocent travelers from Northern Nigeria ...

 Court Sentences Banker to Jail for Fraud in Lagos

 

The Lagos Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has secured the conviction and sentencing of one Ugenyi Kalu, before Justice R.A. Oshodi of a Special Offences Court, sitting in Ikeja, Lagos for fraud.

 

The convict, a banker, was arraigned on a five-count charge, bordering on official corruption and gratification.

 

One of the counts reads: “That you, Ugenyi Kalu sometime in November 2016 in Lagos within the Lagos Judicial Division being the head of Lagos Region of NEXIM Bank, received monetary benefit for yourself in the sum of N4,000,000 (Four Million Naira) from one Obi Ogoh on account of the loan availed to his company Sevirg AgroAllied Mills Ltd by NEXIM Bank. Thereby committed an offence bordering on official corruption contrary to Section 8(1)(a) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and punishable under Section 8(1)(b)ii of the same Law."


He pleaded "not guilty" to all the charges, prompting his trial. In the course of the trial, prosecution counsel, G.C. Ofulue called six witnesses who testified to his crime, two of whom were his co-workers in Nexim Bank. 

 

Delivering judgement on February 12, 2025, Justice Oshodi held that the prosecution proved its case beyond every reasonable doubt, and found him guilty as charged. He was convicted on four of the charges and sentenced to four years and two months imprisonment with or to pay N20,850,000 (Twenty Million, Eight Hundred Fifty Thousand Naira) fine.

 Actor Baba Ijesha appeals five-year jail sentence for sexual assault Nollywood actor Olanrewaju James, known as Baba Ijesha, has filed an appeal against his conviction for the sexual assault of a minor. He has requested the Court of Appeal, Lagos Division, to overturn the ruling of the Lagos State High Court, which sentenced him to five years in prison. The conviction was handed down by Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo (retd.) of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on July 14, 2022 to Baba Ijesha. Baba Ijesha through his counsel Kayode Olabiran on Tuesday, told the appeal court that his client was set up and that he acted according to a script that he was invited to act on by his colleague. “The Appellant was set up.
