Taiwanese authorities have detained the captain of a Chinese cargo vessel accused of severing a subsea telecom cable off the island, a court announced on Thursday.

The Togolese-registered ship Hongtai was intercepted by Taiwanā€™s coast guard on Tuesday after a crucial undersea cable connecting Taiwanā€™s Penghu island group was cut. The vessel, flagged under a convenience registry, had a crew of eight Chinese nationals and was reportedly backed by Chinese funding.

The Tainan District Court ordered the detention of the captain, identified by his surname Wang, citing him as a flight risk.
