Atiku pledges scholarship to viral Niger teen miner Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Sunday said his “heart breaks” each time he watches a viral video of a teenage artisanal miner, Yusuf Aliyu, speaking at a mining site in Niger State after the deaths of 37 miners in the state. Atiku, in a statement posted on his X handle, said he was prepared to support the boy’s education, describing him as a child whose intelligence and confidence should be nurtured in a classroom rather than by working at a mining site. “I have watched Yusuf Aliyu’s video repeatedly, and each time, my heart breaks. A child with such intelligence, clarity and confidence should be in a classroom building his future—not struggling for survival in a community surrounded by gold but buried in poverty. “I cannot look at him and see an ‘illegal miner.’ I see a Nigerian child failed by the country that should have protected him.  Tragedy Strikes Abia Police Command: SRS Commander Slumps, Dies During Meal

Tragedy struck at the Zone 9 Umuahia Abia State Police Command on Thursday when the Commander of the Special Response Squad (SRS), Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kenneth Ndu, suddenly slumped and died while eating with his colleagues.

According to eyewitnesses, DSP Ndu had just returned from an investigative operation and decided to grab a meal at the command headquarters. While eating, he gripped his spoon tightly, causing concern among his colleagues, who rushed to assist him. Moments later, he collapsed.

Efforts to save DSP Ndu's life were hindered by the lack of medical personnel at the Police Clinic on Bende Road, where he was initially taken. He was then rushed to the Federal Medical Center (FMC) Umuahia, where doctors confirmed his death.

Sadly, DSP Ndu was due for retirement from the Nigerian Police Force this month. His sudden demise has left colleagues and associates in shock. The Abia State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Maureen Chinaka, was unreachable for official comments at the time of filing this report.

DSP Ndu's body has been deposited in the morgue. The incident has sent shockwaves through the police community, with many expressing condolences and paying tribute to the late commander.
