 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter.  Anambra: NSCDC Parades Iron Scavenger Arrested In Onitsha South Local Government

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State in collaboration with operatives of AVG Onitsha South Local Government, has paraded one  Zakari Yahui, male , aged 25 from Misau town, Misau Local Government Area of Bauchi State, who was apprehended on March 4, at about 17:45hrs, at Silas Works Street, Fegge Onitsha while destroying and breaking the walls of the gutter, pulling out the iron rods, with an intent to sell them as scrap.


This is contained in a press release by the Head, Media and Tactical Ops NSCDC Anambra State Command, SC Okadigbo Edwin for State Commandant.


According to him,The State Commandant of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Anambra State Command, Maku Olatunde has issued a stern warning to iron scavengers, also known as "ndi akpakara" or "iron kwandem", to cease destroying public and private properties  in the state or face severe legal consequences.


"Meanwhile, he has ordered the  Intelligence/ Investigation department to conduct further investigations,  upon conclusion, the suspect would be charged to court.


"The NSCDC State helmsman said that the command will continue to work tirelessly to ensure that those involved in destruction  of public utilities, private properties and vandalism of critical national state, and local government assets are brought to justice, while  their collaborators, those  buying or selling vandalized materials, would not be spared.


"The Command is out to  stop the activities of those who want to sabotage and  destroy properties belonging to either government or  individuals.


"The suspect confessed to the crime, admitting to vandalism of multiple metal objects and selling them in separate transactions to a scrap vendor,” he said.
