Edo PDP Urges Governor Okpebholo to Address Insecurity as Over 35 Killed in Two Weeks

The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on Governor Monday Okpebholo and his All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government to take urgent action against rising insecurity in the state, alleging that over 35 residents have been killed in the past two weeks.

Speaking at a press conference in Benin City, the PDP’s acting caretaker committee chairman, Anthony Aziegbemi, expressed deep concern over the worsening security situation, which was also highlighted by Senator Adams Oshiomhole during a National Assembly plenary session.

Aziegbemi criticized the Okpebholo administration for failing to protect lives and property, stating that the state is now a hub for violent crimes, including kidnappings and killings. He alleged that victims such as Batemue Philip Ebo (Catholic priest), Christopher Bello (seminarian), and Victor Ogedengbe (vigilante commander) were brutally murdered by militant groups and criminal elements.

“From Edo South to Edo North, killings and violent attacks have become rampant. What was once one of Nigeria’s safest states under Godwin Obaseki’s administration has now become a notorious hotspot for crime,” he said.

Aziegbemi also questioned the fate of the security infrastructure established by the previous administration, demanding explanations for the disbanding of the Edo State Security Network, the absence of security council meetings, and the lack of modern surveillance systems.

Government Response

In response, Fred Itua, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, dismissed the PDP’s claims as politically motivated exaggerations.

“No society is entirely free from security challenges. However, Governor Okpebholo’s administration remains committed to enhancing security, fostering economic growth, and ensuring accountability,” he stated.

He highlighted key security initiatives, including the reorganization of the Edo Security Network, enhanced collaboration with law enforcement, and investments in modern security infrastructure, which he said were already yielding positive results.

Itua also noted that crime rates were previously high due to cult-related violence and kidnappings, but the government’s proactive measures have led to notable improvements.

“Edo residents can see the progress being made, and politically driven misinformation will not change the reality of a state moving towards greater security and stability,” he concluded.
