Police in Cedar Rapids were called to the report of a deceased individual on November 9th, 2024. When authorities arrived on the scene they discovered 18-year-old Ezekiel Baseme, deceased.
According to family members, Ezekiel was suffering from a severe mental break a few days earlier. The family claimed Ezekiel had not been eating or sleeping. They said "he had been acting aggressively towards them and they were worried he might harm someone else or himself, so two of his brothers were forced to tie him down to a mattress".
The brothers said they kept watch over him and when they offered him food or water he would become aggressive again. The brothers claimed at some point while checking on Ezekiel they realized he was stiff and cold to the touch. After finding their brother obviously deceased the siblings waited a day before notifying authorities.
After an extensive investigation into the matter, the state medical examiner announced that Ezekial had passed away as a result of dehydration and probable starvation in a setting of physical restraint.
As a result of the findings during the investigation, police have announced the arrest of three of Ezekiel's siblings. 23-year-old Azane Baseme, 29-year-old Christian Baseme and 26-year-old Pierre Baseme are being charged with involuntary manslaughter, false imprisonment and assault causing bodily injury.
