 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. The Anambra State Police Command today 21st April 2025, after necessary security assessment and feedback on the *Operation Udo Ga Chi - Zero Kidnapping* operations revealed that *Ndi Anambra* is exhausted with criminals threatening their peace and destroying economic activities of the State, especially on Monday. They have also exhibited more commitment to collaborate with security agencies to fish out the bad eggs within the State.


Consequently, the State Commissioner of Police *CP Ikioye Orutugu fwc MNIPS PhD*, has expressed his delight over the improved resilience of residents over the Monday Sit-At-Home. He has further assured of the implementation of various security initiatives to enhance safety, foster community engagement and uphold the rule of law. 


*Operation Udo Ga Chi - Zero Kidnapping and other violent crimes* is intelligence-driven with Joint Security targeted patrols with the Operatives posted to identify locations like Awka, Nnewi, Ihiala, Onitsha, Ogidi, Otuocha and some other places with Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC) on the alert. 


This strategic move is aimed at reinforcing public confidence as well as ensuring the continued safety and security of all residents.
