 Nicole Kidman recalls the heartbreaking moment she found out her mom died Nicole Kidman has opened up about the heartbreaking moment she learned of her mother Janelle’s death just as she was about to accept a best actress award at the Venice International Film Festival.  The Babygirl star recalled being backstage when she received the news, saying she returned to her room “completely devastated” and unsure how she would move forward without her mother, who had been such a central part of her life. She described the “harrowing” attempt to leave Venice in the middle of the night to return to Australia, only to turn back, overwhelmed and alone.  Director Halina Reijn later read a statement on Kidman’s behalf, dedicating the award to Janelle and acknowledging the collision of art and life in that painful moment.  Nigerian Poet Makes History as First African to Win Haiku Contest


Nigerian poet Ibrahim Nureni has become the first Nigerian and African to earn recognition at the prestigious Maya International Haiku Contest, placing second in the 2025 English-language category.


His poem, “a Gecko’s Silent, Sudden Strike on a Fly,” was selected from 464 English entries among 643 submissions from 40 countries.


Describing the achievement as “surreal,” Nureni said it highlights Africa’s growing presence in global literature and hopes it inspires more poets across the continent.
