 Ohanaeze Council Condemns EFCC’s Declaration Of Lagos Governor's Ally, Aisha Achimugu Wanted

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo Youth Council Worldwide has criticised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over what it described as the "unjust persecution" of socialite and businesswoman Aisha Sulaiman Achimugu.

The group, in a statement issued on Sunday by its National President, Mazi Okwu Nnabuike, condemned the manner in which the EFCC raided Achimugu’s Abuja residence and declared her wanted, despite her being out of the country at the time.

A viral video had earlier surfaced online, purportedly showing EFCC officials at the Achimugu family home, where her 80-year-old mother was allegedly forced to sit on the floor and she was denied water.

Okwu decried the EFCC’s decision to declare Achimugu, a well known associate of Lagos State governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, wanted just days after she was invited for questioning. 

He argued that the move appeared to be a premeditated attempt to discredit her.

He further accused the EFCC of acting outside legal procedures, citing the Administration of Criminal Justice Act and the Nigerian Police Act, which prohibit arrests by proxy.

“The reported invitation and declaration of Mrs. Achimugu as wanted is unlawful and a violation of Nigeria’s relevant laws,” Okwu added. “We had expected the EFCC to reconsider, but their continued silence suggests a calculated attempt to tarnish her image.”

The group called on EFCC Chairman, Ola Olukoyede to ensure due process is followed, urging the commission to retract the wanted tag and avoid being used for political witch-hunting.

“The EFCC must act in accordance with the law and desist from harassment that serves certain interests,” Okwu stated. “We urge the chairman to intervene immediately and allow the legal process to take its course without further embarrassment.”
