 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.  OR Tambo Airport Police Officer Arrested for Murder


A 33-year-old police officer stationed at OR Tambo International Airport has been arrested for murder following a fatal shooting at a tavern in Bakenburg, Limpopo.


The suspect, Jan Sekhaolelo, allegedly shot 24-year-old Katlego Thubakgale during the early hours of Monday, 21 April 2025, after a confrontation between the two drivers. The incident occurred around 02:00 outside the tavern.


Police were alerted and responded to the scene, only to learn that the victim had already been transported to a local hospital. Upon arrival at the hospital, they found Thubakgale had been pronounced dead.


It is reported that the suspect, although off duty at the time, transported the victim to the hospital himself. Thubakgale succumbed to a gunshot wound to the right cheek.


The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation. Sekhaolelo's official firearm has been confiscated, and the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID).


The suspect has been detained at Tinmyn Police Station and appeared before the Mahwelereng Magistrate’s Court
