 Four people have died after a car was swept away at an overflowing bridge in the Makotopong River near Sebayeng. Police recovered the bodies after a blue Renault Kwid carrying five occupants was pulled into the river during heavy water flow on Sunday morning, 8 March 2026. One passenger escaped from the vehicle and alerted police and emergency services. Police say the car was travelling along the Madiga–Makotopong gravel road when it overturned at the flooded bridge and was dragged into the river. The Provincial Search and Rescue team recovered the first body on Sunday. The victim was identified as Lebapa Petrus Mochitele, 27, from Madiga Village. EMS personnel declared him dead at the scene. Search operations resumed on Monday with the SAPS Water Wing Unit, EMS Search and Rescue, the Fire and Rescue Department, and an EMS helicopter. Two Arrested for Criminal Conspiracy and Theft


On 29 March 2025 at about 1900 hours, Yahaza Haruna, a 41-year-old resident of the Gidan Gona area in Bauchi Metro, reported to the Command that earlier that same day, at about 1800 hours, he parked his motor vehicle, a green 2000 model Honda Civic with registration number ALK-627-GG, at Yelwan Tudu market. Upon his return, he discovered the vehicle was missing and suspected theft by unknown individuals, prompting him to notify the police.


Upon receiving the report, a team of detectives was assigned to investigate the matter and recover the stolen vehicle. Subsequently, the detectives intercepted the stolen car along the Maiduguri bypass near Awala roundabout. The vehicle was found with two individuals identified as follows:


1. Ibrahim Uzeru, a 30-year-old resident of Kashere Santuraki, Akko Local Government Area, Gombe State

2. John Paul  35-year-old resident of the Bayan Gari area, Bauchi State.


During interview, neither individual could provide a satisfactory explanation regarding the vehicle, resulting in their arrest for further investigation.


During interrogation, one of the suspects, Mr Ibrahim Uzeru, admitted to have received the stolen vehicle from his employer and mentioned that he had invited Mr John Paul to accompany him to Durum and hand over the vehicle to an undisclosed individual. Uzeru also indicated that he had promised Mr. John Paul a sum of twenty thousand naira (₦20,000) as his reward.


The Commissioner of Police, Bauchi State Command, CP Sani-Omolori Aliyu, psc(+), mni, has directed that the case be charged to court upon completing the investigation.
