FG to Sell 753 Seized Housing Units Linked to Ex-CBN Governor Emefiele

The Federal Government has announced plans to sell 753 housing units confiscated from former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor Godwin Emefiele to Nigerians, following their recovery by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The announcement was made during a site inspection of the seized estate by Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, and EFCC Chairman, Olanipekun Olukoyede, according to a statement from the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. The estate, covering over 150,000 square meters and comprising duplexes and various apartment types, was recovered by the EFCC in December 2024 and handed over to the Ministry on the directive of President Bola Tinubu.

Dangiwa revealed that the Ministry would immediately begin technical assessments, including integrity tests on the structures. Upon successful evaluation, the housing units will be completed and offered for sale to Nigerians through the operational Renewed Hope Portal. He emphasized the government’s commitment to transparency and accountability, urging public office holders to avoid corrupt practices. “The government is serious about fighting corruption,” Dangiwa stated, praising the EFCC for what he described as one of the most significant asset recoveries in Nigeria’s history.

EFCC Chairman Olukoyede, speaking at the inspection, clarified that previous television broadcasts showed only an aerial view of the estate. “The essence of this visit is to show that it is real,” he said, highlighting the commission’s dedication to transparency. The EFCC noted that this recovery, secured through a final forfeiture order on December 2, 2024, by Justice Jude Onwuegbuzie of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja, marks the largest single asset recovery since the agency’s inception in 2003.

In April 2025, Emefiele sought to reclaim the estate through an FCT High Court, alleging that the EFCC concealed the forfeiture proceedings despite ongoing interactions with him on other charges. His application was dismissed by the court.

Dangiwa called on Nigerians to support the EFCC’s efforts, expressing confidence in the agency’s continued pursuit of recoveries for public benefit.
