Former President Joe Biden Diagnosed with Aggressive Prostate Cancer, Offers Heartfelt Thanks for Nation’s Support

May 19, 2025 — Washington, D.C.

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, his office announced in a statement Monday morning. The 82-year-old leader, who served as the 46th President of the United States, is said to be undergoing immediate treatment under the care of a specialized oncology team at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Shortly after the news broke, Biden released a brief but emotional message via social media, thanking the American people for their outpouring of support.

“I’m deeply grateful for the thoughts, prayers, and kind words that have come in from across the country,” Biden wrote. “I’ve faced tough fights before, and I’ll face this one with the same faith and resolve—with Jill and my family by my side.”

The diagnosis was confirmed following a routine check-up earlier this month. According to the statement from his personal physician, Dr. Kevin O’Connor, the cancer was detected at an advanced stage, and while serious, Biden is “responding positively” to the initial phase of treatment.

President Biden’s health has been closely monitored since leaving office in January 2025. Though he stepped back from frontline politics after choosing not to run for re-election in 2024, he has remained an influential voice on issues such as democracy, climate change, and international cooperation.

Messages of support have poured in from across the political spectrum. President Kamala Harris said in a statement: “Joe Biden is a fighter, and I have no doubt he will take on this battle with the same courage and resilience he’s shown throughout his life. Doug and I are keeping Joe, Jill, and the entire Biden family in our prayers.”

Former Presidents Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Donald Trump also issued public well-wishes, underscoring the bipartisan support during a difficult time for the Biden family.

Medical experts note that prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among older men. However, aggressive types can spread quickly and require intensive treatment.

Biden’s office says it will provide updates as his condition progresses, and the former president remains “in good spirits, focused on recovery, and grateful for the overwhelming kindness shown to him and his family.”
