The credibility of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) voters’ register has come under intense scrutiny ahead of the 2027 general elections, following revelations by INEC Chairman Professor Joash Amupitan that names of deceased persons remain on the register. Amupitan disclosed that names of voters who died as far back as 15 years ago are still listed, a situation critics say could undermine the integrity of the 2027 polls and lead to significant financial waste through the printing of excess ballot papers and other election logistics. The INEC chairman made the revelation while receiving the Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, and her management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja on Wednesday. INDIA: A WOMAN AND HER ALLEGED LOVER HAVE BEEN ARRESTED FOR THE MURDER OF HER MINOR SON. (PHOTO)

In a horrifying incident that has shaken Guwahati, a woman and her alleged lover have been arrested for the murder of her minor son. The accused, Deepali Rajbongshi, and her partner, Jitumoni Haloi, were taken into custody after police investigations revealed their involvement in the killing of Mrinmoy Barman, Deepali’s young son. The two were produced in court on Monday, while the child’s body remains at the Gauhati Medical College Hospital (GMCH) morgue.

The crime reportedly took place in Beltola Bazaar, where Mrinmoy was last seen alive. Police have cited CCTV footage as critical in uncovering the timeline of the crime. The footage shows the boy heading toward tuition at around 6:41 PM on Saturday and later being transported on a motorcycle by Jitumoni. In what police describe as a staged attempt to confuse investigators, Jitumoni was seen visiting shops in the area and pretending to search for the child after his disappearance.

The victim’s father, Bikash Barman, who had divorced Deepali just four months prior to the incident, claimed he had requested custody of his son but was denied by his former wife. Speaking to reporters, Bikash expressed his shock at discovering Deepali’s relationship with Jitumoni, whom he had never met. Enraged, Bikash physically attacked Jitumoni while he was being escorted to GMCH for a routine medical checkup.

Police suspect the motive behind the gruesome act stems from Deepali’s affair with Jitumoni and a desire to remove the child from their lives. The investigation has yielded substantial evidence, including the incriminating CCTV footage, that has helped piece together the crime. Authorities have vowed a thorough prosecution, as public outrage grows over the disturbing betrayal and murder of an innocent child.
