Luka Modrić to Leave Real Madrid After Club World Cup

May 22, 2025 — Madrid, Spain

In a significant development that marks the end of an era, Real Madrid's veteran midfielder Luka Modrić is set to leave the club after the FIFA Club World Cup in June 2025. The decision, confirmed by sources close to the player and the club, brings to a close one of the most illustrious careers in the history of Los Blancos.

Modrić, 39, has spent 13 glittering seasons at the Santiago Bernabéu, winning numerous domestic and international titles, including five UEFA Champions League trophies, three La Liga titles, and a Ballon d'Or in 2018. Known for his vision, passing range, and composure, the Croatian international became a symbol of excellence and consistency in Real Madrid’s midfield.

While Real Madrid has not yet issued an official statement, reports suggest that the club and Modrić have mutually agreed that the Club World Cup will serve as a fitting farewell, allowing him to conclude his time at the club on a global stage.

Modrić has seen reduced playing time in recent months due to the emergence of younger midfield talents like Jude Bellingham, Eduardo Camavinga, and Aurélien Tchouaméni. Despite limited minutes, he remained a respected figure in the dressing room and continued to deliver quality performances whenever called upon.

Speculation about Modrić’s next move is already mounting. While retirement is one possibility, sources indicate he is considering a final playing stint in either the MLS or Saudi Pro League. Modrić has also expressed interest in eventually moving into coaching or taking on a leadership role within Croatian football.

Real Madrid fans are expected to give Modrić a hero’s sendoff, with tributes already pouring in from across the football world. The Club World Cup will not only be a battle for one final trophy, but also an emotional curtain call for a modern legend.

As Real Madrid looks to the future, the departure of Luka Modrić closes a remarkable chapter in the club’s storied history—one defined by elegance, leadership, and relentless pursuit of greatness.
