Russia Bombards Ukraine with Drones Hours After Trump Announces Talks with Putin

May 19, 2025 — Kyiv, Ukraine

In a sudden escalation of hostilities, Russia launched a wave of drone attacks on multiple Ukrainian cities early Monday morning, mere hours after former U.S. President Donald Trump revealed plans to open direct talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the ongoing war.

Ukraine’s Air Force reported that it intercepted 24 out of 32 Iranian-made Shahed drones targeting infrastructure in Kyiv, Odesa, and Dnipro. Several explosions were heard across the capital, and emergency services responded to fires and damaged residential buildings. At least five people were injured in the capital, with reports of additional casualties still being confirmed.

“Russia continues to terrorize our civilian population,” said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a televised address. “These attacks are a direct challenge not just to Ukraine, but to every nation that values peace and sovereignty.”

The drone strikes came hours after Trump, currently campaigning for a return to the White House in 2025, told supporters at a rally in Ohio that he intends to “speak with Vladimir Putin directly” to “end the war quickly.” While details of the proposed talks remain unclear, the announcement has sparked mixed reactions in Washington and European capitals.

U.S. State Department officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, expressed concern that any unauthorized negotiation efforts could undercut ongoing diplomatic and military support for Ukraine. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov declined to confirm or deny any scheduled talks but said Russia “welcomes any serious dialogue.”

Analysts warn the drone barrage could be a message from Moscow — a reminder of its capacity for destruction amid shifting political dynamics in the West.

As tensions rise, Ukraine continues to appeal for more advanced air defense systems from Western allies. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg condemned the attacks, calling them “cowardly and unjustifiable,” and reaffirmed the alliance’s commitment to Ukraine’s defense.

The timing of Russia’s strikes — so close to Trump’s announcement — has raised questions about Moscow’s strategic calculus and the potential implications for global diplomacy.
