Tensions flared in Blackburn on Monday morning when an enraged community threatened to douse six men with petrol and set them alight over a series of alleged crimes in the area.
The incident began when a mob apprehended four men and assaulted them in an attempt to extract information about two suspects wanted for criminal activity. With the information obtained, the group tracked down the remaining suspects.
The six men were marched to a local soccer field, where their hands were tied with ropes and electrical cables. They were then beaten with sticks and planks, and the crowd threatened to torch them.
Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) was alerted around 10:34 AM by an onlooker concerned for the safety of four men not linked to any crimes. RUSA officers arrived to find a crowd of around 100 people gathered, hurling insults at the injured men.
It was discovered that one of the suspects had recently been released from Westville Prison after serving seven months for burglary. Another was accused of robbing pedestrians. The other four had no known criminal ties.
Four of the victims sustained fractures during the assault. Verulam SAPS arrived shortly after and have launched an investigation.
