 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.  Suspect Arrested in Cash-in-Transit Robbery


Nyameko Samela (40) has been arrested in connection with a cash-in-transit robbery and attempted murder. He was already in custody for other unrelated matters when the arrest was made.


The charges relate to a robbery that took place in January 2025 at Food Lovers Market in Somerset West. A G4S cash vehicle was collecting money when armed suspects attacked. One of the guards was shot while running back to the vehicle. The suspects fled with two bags of cash estimated at R331,000.


Following an investigation, police identified Samela as a suspect and linked him to the crime. He appeared in the Somerset West Magistrates Court on 15 May 2025. The case has been postponed to 3 July 2025, and he remains in custody.
