 NUT Protest : Wike Warns Against Politicising Insecurity The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has warned against politicising insecurity amid protests by the Nigeria Union of Teachers, FCT wing, over the killing and abduction of school staff and children in Oyo State. Teachers stormed the FCTA Secretariat in Abuja to condemn the killing of Michael Oyedokun and to demand the release of abducted pupils and teachers from Community High School, Ahoro-Esinle in Oriire Local Government Area. The FCT minister addressed the protesters on Tuesday, saying the federal government is on its toes working to secure the rescue of the schoolchildren and their teachers. Wike urged protesters to avoid turning the tragedy into a political issue and to give security efforts time to produce results. Abia Lands Commissioner Escapes Assassination Attempt on Okigwe–Umuahia Road


Chaka Chukwumerije, the Abia State Commissioner for Lands and Housing, narrowly escaped an assassination attempt two nights ago when unknown gunmen opened fire on his vehicle along the Okigwe–Umuahia road.


The incident occurred as Chukwumerije, a key figure in Governor Alex Otti’s administration, was returning to Umuahia. According to his brother, Dike Chukwumerije, a trailing vehicle unleashed a barrage of bullets on the Commissioner’s car. Miraculously, Chukwumerije and three other occupants escaped unharmed, though their vehicle sustained significant damage from bullet holes.


Dike described the attack as a deliberate attempt on his brother’s life, highlighting Chaka’s dedication to public service and his alignment with Governor Otti’s reform agenda. “Chaka has buried himself in his work. He’s been selfless, focused, and fully aligned with the reform-driven government of Alex Otti,” he said. “Unfortunately, it is often people like him—committed to doing the right thing—who face the greatest threats.”


The Chukwumerije family expressed gratitude for the Commissioner’s survival and reaffirmed their commitment to serving Abia State with integrity despite the dangers.


Security agencies are expected to investigate the attack, but no official statements have been issued by the Abia State Government or the Nigeria Police Force at this time.
