 Australia bans social media for under-16s in world-first move  Australia has implemented a sweeping ban on social media use for children under 16, marking a world-first move aimed at curbing teenage addiction to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Under the new rules, social media companies and popular websites face fines of up to AU$49.5 million ($33 million) if they allow underage users to maintain accounts. The government says the measures are necessary to shield children from harmful content, including bullying, sexual material, and online predators. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that social media “is often used as a weapon for bullies, a platform for peer pressure, a driver of anxiety, and a tool for online predators.” The law, effective Wednesday, immediately blocks hundreds of thousands of teenagers from accessing the apps they used daily.  At least 50 people killed after Sudan gold mine collapses


At least 50 people have been killed in a gold mine collapse in northeastern Sudan, local media reported on Sunday, Anadolu Agency reported.


The mine collapsed on Saturday in Howaid desert in the Nile River State, the local newspaper Alrakoba said.


Witnesses said large volumes of sand and rocks collapsed on miners while working at a rudimentary site known for unregulated mining activity.


Rescue efforts were hampered by the absence of heavy machinery and professional rescue teams slowing the retrieval of dozens of bodies from the rubble, they added.


Hazardous conditions


A similar collapse occurred at the same location two months ago, causing injuries.


The tragedy has renewed criticism over weak government oversight and poor infrastructure at artisanal mining sites where thousands work under hazardous conditions without formal regulation or safety standards.
