 Emeka Kalu Withdraws from Abia North Senatorial Race A prominent Labour Party (LP) chieftain in Abia State, Dr. Emeka Kalu, has withdrawn from the Abia North Senatorial District race. Dr. Kalu announced his decision on Wednesday, stating that the move was designed to foster unity within the Labour Party and strengthen support for the administration of Governor Alex Otti ahead of future elections. In a statement issued to party stakeholders and supporters, Kalu explained that his withdrawal came after wide consultations and a careful assessment of the prevailing political situation in the party. He emphasized that the decision was taken in the overall interest of the party’s cohesion and success in Abia State.

MADEIRA: MAN ARRESTED AFTER PARTNER DIES IN HOSPITAL


A 51-year-old woman died in a Mthatha private hospital on Friday, 06 June 2025 from injuries sustained during a gender-based violence incident. The assault occurred at an automotive dealership in Mthatha on Saturday, 31 May 2025, involving her 57-year-old male partner.


It is alleged that the deceased from East London visited her boyfriend who is an employee at the dealership on 31 May 2025 and due to their quarrel, the suspect physically assaulted the victim at his workplace and took her to hospital on Sunday, 01 June 2025 where she was admitted. The suspect claimed that his lover was assaulted by unknown thugs near the dealership.


Police information further confirms that on Friday, 06 June 2025, the suspect visited the victim in the hospital, bringing her refreshments. The victim subsequently became sick and ultimately died at approximately 13:55 that same day. Based on preliminary investigations utilizing available electronic evidence, the 57-year-old male suspect was arrested on Friday, 06 June 2025, at approximately 19:00.


The post-mortem/autopsy results will determine the exact cause of the victim's death.


The Acting OR Tambo District Commissioner, Brigadier Vukile Ntuli applauded Madeira police for their swift action in arresting the suspect. Brigadier Ntuli urged police to thoroughly investigate and secure a conviction.
