Pornography, Propaganda In Social Media Spaces Worry Anambra Government

By Rose Oranye

Anambra State Government has decried the quantity of pornography and propaganda available in various social media spaces.

The state's Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, while speaking at the closing ceremony of a two-day Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Workshop for youth and youth-led organisations in South East Nigeria, at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Auditorium, organised by Media and Information and Inter-cultural Dialogue (MILID) Foundation in collaboration with UNESCO and Anambra State Ministry of Information, among others, observed that the quantity of sexuality in social media skits is alarming, and nothing short of pornography.

He stated that pornography is redefining so much of the social media information being consumed by the people in various social media spaces thereby  showcasing the kind of irresponsibility inherent in the people creating such contents.

He advised content creators, particularly youths to eschew the use of pornography in creating contents but to think deeper to generate contents through other societal issues.

"What MILID Foundation, UNESCO and Ministry of Information is trying to tell you about media and information literacy is that you owe the society some level of responsibility. It's true that through such reckless contents, you can draw traffic to your social media handles to a point that they may start paying you. Yes, money will come from it but at what cost?

" Those of us in government in Anambra State are worried about irresponsibility while creating contents or putting out information out there. We are worried about not only such contents and the recklessness of such exhibition. We are worried about propaganda. Some people say propaganda is necessary in politics. I don't think that a government that is doing well needs propaganda. Let facts speak for itself.

"We don't believe in propaganda here. As the Manager-in- Chief of Information in Anambra State, what we try to do is put out the accurate data/information in every possible way, avoiding propaganda, misinformation, falsification or nuancing of information in a way that you make it look acceptable. And we have made this our reputation. If you have been hearing that Solution is here in Anambra State; those of you who are visiting, we invite you to do a project tour - the ministry will help you to look around to see that indeed, the Solution Governor, Prof Chukwuma Charles Soludo has done so much in less than three years," he said.
