 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC). "We have made a collective decision: no electricity, no vote," said community leader Lesiba Rankapole, 59. "We know it is illegal, but we had no choice because we cannot live without electricity.  Several People Killed in R81 Mooketsi Head-On Collision


A tragic head-on collision between two bakkies on the R81 near Mooketsi in Limpopo has claimed several lives and left others injured on Tuesday, 17 June 2025.


According to preliminary reports, one of the bakkies was transporting firewood when it collided head-on with another bakkie traveling in the opposite direction. The impact was so severe that both vehicles were extensively damaged, with some occupants trapped inside the wreckage.


Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene, where some individuals were declared dead, while others were stabilised and transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical treatment. The exact number of fatalities is yet to be confirmed, as authorities continue with investigations.


Motorists using the route were advised to exercise caution as recovery operations continued.
