The golden glasses of Akan chiefs.

Long before shutter shades became a thing in popular culture, chiefs of the West African tribes wore barred up lenses made from solid gold.

Their purpose wasn't for vision or sight but it was rather a social structure that symbolized the hierarchy. The purpose of the glasses was that nobody could look the chief in the eyes. Highlighting the significance and power dynamic within the ethnic group 🇬🇭 🇨🇮.
