 A Mother's Day Nightmare in Princeton, Illinois. A 3-year-old boy was struck by gunfire as police burst into a barricaded room, ending a frightening hostage situation. Multiple agencies responded to the Hummingbird Mobile Home Park in Princeton, Illinois, on Sunday, May 10th at 2:42 a.m. The initial call went out as a domestic disturbance but officers discovered much worse.  42-year-old, Anthony Rodriguez, had barricaded himself in a room armed with a knife. Anthony had taken several people as hostages, including Aurora Almanza and her 3-year-old son.  Multiple agencies were on the scene, including the Bureau County Sheriff's Office, Illinois State Police and  the Princeton Police Department.  Authorities attempted to negotiate but ultimately rushed the room when they heard screaming coming from inside.  Officials have reported that officers fired shots as they entered the room.  Three Dangerous Murder Suspects Escape from Custody, Still at Large


Three awaiting-trial prisoners, Patrick Mbombi, Thabo Moye Makgopa, and Javas Mongwe, escaped from police custody on the morning of 24 June 2025 after overpowering officers at the Letsitele policing precinct. The suspects are still on the run.


The trio was being held for their alleged role in the brutal murder of Raymond Themba Mathebula, a former teacher at Kremetart Primary School and resident of Bode Village. The murder occurred in April 2024.


It is alleged that Mathebula’s wife, Mahlaule, hired the three men to kill her husband in exchange for an insurance payout. Reports indicate the suspects charged R200,000 for the hit, with R10,000 paid upfront and the balance to be paid after the insurance claim was processed.


Mahlaule and the suspects had been in custody following multiple court appearances.


Police have warned that the escaped men are extremely dangerous and have urged the public not to approach them. Anyone with information on their whereabouts is asked to contact their nearest police station immediately.
