 Australia bans social media for under-16s in world-first move  Australia has implemented a sweeping ban on social media use for children under 16, marking a world-first move aimed at curbing teenage addiction to platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. Under the new rules, social media companies and popular websites face fines of up to AU$49.5 million ($33 million) if they allow underage users to maintain accounts. The government says the measures are necessary to shield children from harmful content, including bullying, sexual material, and online predators. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasized that social media “is often used as a weapon for bullies, a platform for peer pressure, a driver of anxiety, and a tool for online predators.” The law, effective Wednesday, immediately blocks hundreds of thousands of teenagers from accessing the apps they used daily. ‎The leader of the Fulani commu­nity in Anambra State and Depu­ty Director-General of Miyetti Al­lah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, has raised alarm over what he saw as the constant and incessant intimidations and molestations of their members by vigilante operatives in Umueri community, Anambra-East coun­cil area of the state.

‎Alhaji Siddiki who spoke in an interview with news from daily Independent alleged that vigilante operatives used to arrest their members without any justifi­able reasons, further alleging that anytime the security opera­tives saw a Fulani herdsman on motorcycle, they would stop him, pick him, maltreat him and blind­fold him until they extorted huge sums of money from him before they released him.

‎He lamented some of their mem­bers reported to him that they were blindfolded from 5.pm to 8.pm until huge sums of money were extorted from them by the vigilante operatives in Umueri before they eventually released them without handing them over to the police.

‎He therefore stressed that so many of their members are re­porting to him that they are being maltreated by vigilant men while carrying out their legitimate cat­tle rearing activities in Umueri community, even as he appealed to the state government to inter­vene to save their members from unnecessary intimidations and maltreatments from vigilante men in Umueri and other parts of Anambra-East Local Govern­ment Area.
