A young boy only identified as 'K.S.' was discovered floating in a Quality Inn Pool in Palm Bay, Florida on July 26th.
K.S. was discovered by a housekeeper who looked out of the window in a room she was cleaning and noticed the young boy floating in the pool.
The housekeeper ran from the room and began shouting to the child's dad, Sharef Omar Smith, who was sleeping very deep by the pool.
She screamed for Smith to grab the child, but rather than helping Smith remained motionless. The woman pulled the young child from the pool herself while Smith just stood there watching.
She again begged Smith for help and again her pleas went unanswered. Although the woman had no CPR training she began attempting life saving measures. She again asked Smith for help and rather than help, Smith became hostile and swore at the woman.
Smith would continue to be hostile towards hotel staff and first responders through the entire ordeal. He was uncooperative in providing details about how the child ended up in the pool.
The child was rushed to a nearby hospital where he was sadly pronounced deceased. A review of hotel security cameras revealed the boy could be seen struggling in the pool for 23 minutes in front of his dad, while his dad slept. The child tried desperately to get his dad's help.
Authorities would find a bottle of wine in Smith's poolside bag and another bottle in his room.
Sharef Omar Smith is being charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and child neglect with serious bodily harm. He is being held in Brevard County Jail with no bond.
