From Mars to Niger: Largest Known Martian Meteorite Up for Auction

Discovered in the Sahara Desert near Agadez, Niger, the Martian meteorite known as NWA 16788 is heading for auction at Sotheby’s on Wednesday, Sputnik reported.

Weighing 24.67 kg, this extraordinary specimen is the largest known piece of Mars on Earth, comprising 6.5% of all Martian material ever found.

Launched into space by an asteroid impact and traveling 140 million miles before landing in Niger, the meteorite was uncovered by a hunter in November 2023. Its value is estimated between $2–4 million, thanks to its exceptional size, well-preserved “reddish-brown fusion crust”, and minimal Earth weathering.

Of over 77,000 meteorites discovered on Earth, only 400 are from Mars. NWA 16788 stands out with a 70% size advantage over the previous record holder. As Sotheby’s notes, it is “an incredibly rare” and likely a “rather recent” arrival on Earth.
