 “No electricity, no vote,” South Africans threaten to shun ruling party ANC Residents in Katlehong, a township outside Johannesburg, have resolved to boycott South Africa's upcoming local elections on November 4 due to long-standing failures by authorities to provide basic services like electricity. For over 20 years, around 180 households in the community have relied on illegal electrical connections pulled from neighboring areas to power their homes. Angry over the lack of formal grid infrastructure, residents are directing their frustration at the ruling African National Congress (ANC).  I don’t like being told what to do – Moliy on why she is still independent


Ghanaian musician Moliy says the biggest reason she’s remained independent is her strong dislike for being creatively controlled. 


For her, freedom to express herself without interference is non-negotiable.


“The most freeing part is just getting to do what I want creatively without someone telling me what to do. 


"I don’t like being told what to do,” she said in an interview with Revolt T, passionately defending her artistic space.


While she doesn’t rule out working with a record label in the future, Moliy stressed that it would have to be on her terms — a genuine and lasting relationship that respects her voice.


“I don’t just wanna be a name on a list. Music is very personal to me,” she added.


“So, I think if I did get locked in with a label, I hope it’s something that could be a real, long-lasting, organic relationship.”


She also highlighted the discipline required as an independent artist.


“If you’re not pushing yourself, if you’re not putting your foot on the gas, no one is gonna do it for you,” Moliy noted.
