How I permanently lost my voice on movie set – Actress Azeezat Shorunmu

Actress Azeezat Shorunmu has recounted how her voice became damaged during the filming of a movie called “Apase”.

Speaking in an interview on Oyinmomo TV, she said the incident occurred when she received news that her senior colleague, Surutu, had lost her child on the day of filming.

Azeezat explained that she was overcome with emotion and screamed, which led to her vocal cords becoming damaged.

According to her, despite trying various remedies, including medical treatment and spiritual intervention with anointing oil, her voice didn’t return to normal.

Instead, it came back with a raspy tone that has become her signature sound.

The actress recounted the ordeal, saying she struggled to express herself during the production of “Apase” due to her blocked throat.

Even after four months, her voice didn’t improve, and she realised the extent of the damage.

Azeezat now speaks with a unique voice that differs from her original tone, which she acknowledges is no longer the same.

“Everyone knows that this is not my real voice. It happens while shooting the movie ‘Apase’. Mummy Surutu lost her child that very morning we were to commence shooting.

“And she has been paid already. I was confused and didn’t know what to do upon hearing the news. It was when I was shouting that I lost my voice.

“My voice was blocked throughout the production. Normally, a blocked throat lasts for a short period.

“But mine did not open, it became worse after four months. That was when I realised that it was a painful thing to be dumb. It hurts when you want to express yourself, but you cannot.

“I used various things, including anointing oil. By the time the vocal cord was through, it didn’t come out as my voice again. It became this tiny and cracked voice,” she stated.
