Lionsgate and Universal schedule Michael for April 2026 release

Lionsgate and Universal have scheduled the release of Michael, Antoine Fuqua’s biographical film about pop icon Michael Jackson, for April 24, 2026. Lionsgate will oversee distribution in the United States, while Universal will handle international markets, excluding Japan, where Kino Films will release the movie. The film will also be shown in IMAX theaters globally.

Though its release precedes the traditional start of the summer movie season in May, Michael is expected to serve as the first major tentpole of that critical box office period. This shift coincides with Disney’s decision to move upcoming Avengers films out of their usual early May slots and into the holiday season. The film stars Jaafar Jackson as his uncle, Michael Jackson, alongside Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson, and Miles Teller as Jackson’s longtime attorney, John Branca. The project was delayed from an original October 2025 release after the filmmakers submitted an early cut running three and a half hours. Michael joins a 2026 Lionsgate slate that includes the Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping, a sequel to I Can Only Imagine, and Mel Gibson’s The Resurrection of the Christ.
