SDP Crisis Worsens as NEC Sacks NWC, Disowns El-Rufai Amid Leadership Tussle

The Social Democratic Party (SDP) is in turmoil following a major shake-up in its leadership. The party's National Executive Committee (NEC) on Friday announced the dissolution of the National Working Committee (NWC), accusing the ousted members of violating internal processes and promoting factionalism.

The NEC said the drastic action was necessary to save the party from further disintegration ahead of the 2027 general elections.

In a related move, the SDP leadership publicly disassociated itself from former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai. Despite El-Rufai’s widely publicized defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the SDP earlier this year, the party stated he was never officially registered as a member.

The NEC accused him of attempting to hijack the party's structure for personal political ambition, adding that his actions do not reflect the party’s ideology or values.

These developments mark a significant escalation in the party's internal crisis, which has been festering since early 2025. Analysts warn that the crisis could severely weaken the SDP’s credibility and electoral prospects if not resolved swiftly.

As both factions prepare for legal and political battles, there are fears that the SDP may splinter into rival groups in the months ahead.
