Senator Orji Kalu Reveals Tinubu, Atiku Are Close Friends Despite Political Differences

Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, representing Abia North, has disclosed that President Bola Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar maintain a close friendship despite their political rivalry, suggesting they may even visit each other privately at night.

Speaking in an interview, the former Abia State governor dismissed criticism of his recent visit to Governor Alex Otti of Abia State, emphasizing that political differences should not sever personal relationships. “If anybody thinks I’ll stop visiting the governor because I’m an APC senator and he’s a Labour Party governor, they are wasting their time,” Kalu said. “If I leave politics tomorrow, will I abandon friendships because of party lines? No.”

Kalu, reflecting on his own relationships, noted his longstanding ties with Atiku, recalling how he and former Adamawa Governor Boni Haruna were among the few governors who visited Atiku during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s tenure, despite tensions. He described Atiku as a “good friend” of President Tinubu, stating, “They are playing politics. I’m sure they might even be exchanging visits in the night. Nobody knows.”

The senator stressed the importance of open relationships across party lines for Nigeria’s constitutional democracy. “All the major players in PDP are my friends, and I can’t do away with them because they are in another party,” he said, criticizing those who hide their interactions while claiming loyalty to political camps. Kalu’s remarks highlight a call for transparency and camaraderie among political leaders, despite public perceptions of rivalry.
