Six students killed in fall at Chinese mining site

Six students lost their lives after falling into a flotation tank during a visit to a mining facility in China.

The tragic incident occurred on Wednesday at the Wunugetushan Copper-Molybdenum Mine’s flotation plant, operated by Zhongjin Gold Corporation. The students, all from Northeastern University in Shenyang, were on a tour of the site when the grate they were standing on gave way, causing them to plunge into the industrial tank.

Despite rescue efforts, medical personnel confirmed that all six students had died. A teacher accompanying the group was also injured in the fall. Flotation tanks are used in mineral processing to separate materials by mixing ground ore with water and chemicals to create a slurry. Zhongjin Gold released a statement Thursday confirming the deaths and expressing condolences. Meanwhile, shares of the company dropped 4.41% on the Shanghai Stock Exchange. Northeastern University has not yet issued a public statement regarding the incident.
