 New UK Prime Minister not the leader Britain needs — Kemi Badenoch UK Conservative Party leader, Kemi Badenoch, has congratulated Andy Burnham on becoming Britain’s new prime minister but said while he is “a nice man,” the country needs a leader capable of making difficult decisions rather than “a people pleaser.” In a statement released on Monday on X following Burnham’s assumption of office, Badenoch wished the new prime minister success but vowed to hold his government accountable as Leader of the Opposition. “Today, Britain has a new Prime Minister. I wish Andy Burnham every success. Because we need a Prime Minister and a Government focused on fixing the public’s priorities,” she said. Starmer says UK will recognize Palestinian state if Israel does not agree to ceasefire


Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Tuesday that the U.K. plans to recognize a Palestinian state in September unless Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza and takes meaningful steps toward a lasting peace. Starmer convened a rare summer Cabinet meeting to address the escalating crisis in Gaza and outline the government’s stance.

He told ministers that Britain will move forward with recognizing Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly if the Israeli government does not take significant action to end the humanitarian crisis, agree to a ceasefire, renounce any plans to annex parts of the West Bank, and commit to a peace process aimed at achieving a two-state solution. While the U.K. has historically supported a negotiated two-state solution, calls to formally recognize Palestinian statehood have intensified following French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France will recognize Palestine in September, making it the first major Western nation to do so.
